The scoop on VT shops

Shalom Shuk –

Shalom Shuk may be my favorite thrift store ever.  I have talked about it so much that I think I should be paid for helping bring in so many customers…maybe I should shut up before all the great finds are snagged!  It is part of Ohavi Zedek Synagoge and it is so quaint with the cutest manager, Kay, who excitedly remarks as she sorts through “new” clothes.  It’s hit or miss, but you’re bound to find some Banana Republic, Ann Taylor and even Free People!

The Possibility Shop –

The Possibility Shop is part of the First Congregational Church.  It is predominately frumpy, but occasionally there are some stand apart winners.  And if you find something cute, it is a bonafide score with things selling for $1-$3 dollars.  They also have a great 25 cent rack that is surprisingly expansive.

The Salvation Army –

Conveniently located a block from where I work, I can drop in occasionally during lunch break!  Their shoe “department” is oftentimes really amazing believe it or not.  I’ve had good luck with clothing as well. It’s just small enough to peruse the whole store in 10 minutes and see if there are any exciting new arrivals.

The Goodwills –

Both Goodwills are huge and overwhelming, but if you are up for the challenge, you are bound to find something to fit your style or make for a great halloween costume.  The patterned blouse section is often more fruitful than the plain colors.  The dress section is always fun as well!

Richmond Food Shelf and Thrift Store –

This is where out of season items brought to Second Time Around go.  Walking in here feels like entering a fantasy world where Habitual jeans (normally $200) are selling for $10.  There is even a rack for new items, to make frequent trips that much quicker.  Definitely worth the 15 minute drive from Burlington!

58 Bridge St, Richmond VT

Stella Mae –

This is one of my Church Street favorites, mainly for its adorable shoes.  I like to admire and ogle over them from afar because $100+ for shoes really aint that cute.  Stella Mae is stocked with classics like Frye and Dolce Vita, and some other fun brands like Jeffrey Campbell and Moss Mills.  Admittedly, I’ve splurged on a couple essentials.

96 Church Street, Burlington VT

Plato’s Closet –

Plato’s Closet is a consignment store similar to Beacon’s Closet in NY.  It is mainly geared towards teens with an endless supply of Charlotte Russe, Abercrombie, and Hollister, but it is a fun place to dig around in.  They have great designer jeans for low prices and some more mature brands like Ella Moss and J. Crew.  It is huge (for VT standards).  I usually leave exhausted after sifting through every color coded rack, but it’s all worth it to Spend Less on high quality items.

Second Time Around –

STA is a very selective, designer consignment store.  Yes, it is stocked full with chic second hand, but it is still a slight splurge compared to most bargain shopping.  I love seeing what they have and the great part is, almost everything gets marked down.  The best is to patiently wait for 70% off…then you’ll find the true steals!

89 Church Street, Burlington VT

The Bene-fit Shop –

This is a tiny little shop in Barre, but it might just surprise you like it did me!  Everything was dirt cheap and I lucked out on my first visit!  If you happen to be in the classy town of Barre, it’s definitely worth a stop in.

15 Cottage Street, Barre City VT

Urban Outfitters –

As most of you probably know, you typically will not Spend Less at Urban, but then again, there is the SALE rack which can be very much worth it.

25 Church Street, Burlington VT

Replays Thrift Shop –

This shop, in the Burlington Blue Mall, has a lot of selection with items in the $5-$15 range.  It is well-organized with a good mix of trendy and vintage finds.  It may not be the cheapest thrift store, but is a fun place to visit and explore, and sells designer brands for much cheaper than you would find most places.
